  37.                          INTRODUCING NISSPAC
  38.  
  39. NISSPAC is a database service provided for the higher education community by
  40. NISS (National Information on Software and Services).
  41.  
  42. The idea behind NISSPAC is to provide a common interface to a variety of text
  43. based data collections. At present, these consist of the NISS Software and
  44. Datasets Catalogue, VAX Applications Software Directory, IBM Study Contracts
  45. dataset and the CHEST Directory.
  46.  
  47. While every effort is being made to maintain a similar mode of use with each
  48. of the data collections, some variations arise due to differences in the
  49. nature and structure of the data.
  50.  
  51. Selecting a service from the NISSPAC menu results in a 'Main Menu' display for
  52. that particular service. Full details regarding content, purpose and method of
  53. use can be obtained at the Main Menu stage.
  54.  
  55. After using a particular service, the user may elect to exit the system and
  56. logoff, or return to the NISSPAC Menu to select another service.

  84.                    CHEST and the CHEST Directory
  85.  
  86. The Combined Higher Education Software Team, CHEST, exists to make good
  87. quality commercial software available to the Higher Education community at
  88. attractive prices and fair licence conditions.  This is achieved by
  89. negotiating reduced prices with software suppliers, arranging central
  90. funding for some software purchases when recommended by the Inter
  91. University Software Committee (IUSC) and encouraging the use of a standard
  92. set of licence conditions.

  94. All agreements through CHEST are on the basis that suppliers will be
  95. contacted by only one named person per site.  He/she is known as your CHEST
  96. Site Contact; a full list will be found on the NISS Bulletin Board in
  97. Section D3E.

  99. The CHEST Directory contains details of software products available to the
  100. UK academic community at special discounts. This version of the Directory
  101. will be updated monthly. Details of each month's changes can be found on
  102. the NISS Bulletin Board in Section D3D2X.
